 Day 1

Module 1 Data Collection & Analysis
The importance of recording sufficient data accurately and in the most
appropriate format, and the analysis and use of that data.
    Modules 2 & 3 Storage Equipment & Mobile Equipment
The principles underlying storage design, a review of storage systems
and their characteristics, the importance of handling equipment
selection and the conflict between product access and space
    utilisation.
    Case Study 1
Comparison of Palletised Warehousing Systems Short cut methods
for estimating capital and annualised costs of a range of pallet storage
    systems.
Day 2
    Module 4 Order Picking Methods
A review of the different methods of order picking and their suitability
to different types of operation. The effects of using separate reserve
    and picking stocks.
    Module 5 Order Picking Equipment
Order picking equipment types and the characteristics which affect their
    suitability for different picking methods.
Case Study 2 Warehouse Design (part 1)
The design of a warehouse for the storage of palletised goods, case
picking and order despatch, using several combinations of Truck and
Racking type. Capital and annualised costs for each solution are then
    compared.
Day 3
Case Study 2 Warehouse Design (part 2)
Module 6 Warehouse Mechanisation & Automation
Discusses and demonstrates warehouse automated systems, their
    advantages and disadvantages.
Module 7 Receipt & Despatch Areas
A look at the important factors in the design of the goods inwards and
despatch areas, external access and vehicle marshalling areas, dock
levelling, load/unload equipment and environmental considerations.

Case Studies

The case studies used in this course are designed to illustrate how the
basic costs for a warehouse design can be developed. The first case study
develops the cost parameters from a blank sheet of paper. The second
case study develops the ideas further to calculate the equipment and
manning levels needed to effectively run a warehouse using differing types
of equipment.
